News: 2011 Season Recap

I am happy to report that our 2011 season was one of the best on record!  From our opening day on June 12 until we closed on August 6, salmon were abundant.  Good water levels and temperatures, as well as a strong return of spawning fish, combined to give us a record year in terms of fish hooked.   From the feedback I’ve received from this year’s guests, everybody enjoyed the other aspects of the trip too - the food, the surroundings and the company of our guides.
In 2011, Salmon Hole Lodge hosted 53 guests - including 37 returning clients (70%).  This year, our guests arrived from several parts of Canada (66%), several states in the U.S. (30%) and England (4%).  Catch results were well above average compared to other Newfoundland rivers and, as usual, the vast majority of salmon / grilse were safely released.

This season, eight of our clients stayed at the Lower Camp. Phil Bond provided the guide services at the Lower Camp and, once again, our customers gave Phil top marks for his hospitality, guiding abilities and home cooked meals.

Forty five guests stayed at the Upper Camp, where Alex and Sid worked hard to keep our guests fishing in productive pools.  One of our regular guides, Garland, took the summer off for knee replacement surgery and recovery.  I’m happy to report Garland is doing well.  We’re hoping he’ll be back, in his usual fine form, for the 2012 season.  Garland’s job was filled by Eileen Chant (Alex’s better half) – for the first 4 weeks of the season; then by Phil for the last 3 weeks.  I want to thank them both for doing a fine job filling Garland’s shoes.

I spent the second week in August painting (floors and building exteriors) and starting my newest project – fixing up the tractor trail.  Filling in the low spots is going to take a few years – considering it’s all done with a shovel and an all terrain vehicle.  For 2012, I’m hoping to build a roof over the deck of the Upper Camp.  It will be nice to have the option of sitting on the deck - even when it’s raining.

Our goal is to provide all the ingredients for a memorable fishing vacation and, based on the feedback we received from our 2011 guests, we seem to be moving in the right direction.  Please check out our Comments page.
